The Apartheid museum  was opened in 2001 and is acknowledged as the prominent museum in the world dealing with 20th  Century South Africa at the heart of which is the apartheid story.  The museum  is Johannesburg’s leading tourist attraction an obligatory stop for visitors and residents alike. The Apartheid museum is situated just near to the Gold Reef City, five kilometers south of the City Center.

The museum gives an unbiased account of  South’s history over the past century, eloquently highlighting South Africa’s social and racial  dynamics and celebrating democracy.

GOLD REEF CITY

Gold Reef City, a gold mine named after the richness upon which the city of Johannesburg was built. The former working mine is now a theme park, where one can absorb the atmosphere of the early 1900’s, while learning the history of the mineral that built Johannesburg. 

The tour includes watching a gold pour, miners carrying out their traditional tribal and gumboot dancing. Also a chance for one to learn a bit of the specially devised mine language, this language is still used today to cover the  many and diverse tribes who worked in the mines. STERKFONTEIN CAVES

Just about an hours drive from Johannesburg, the Sterkfontein Caves are famous for their fossil finds and the caves are a well known visitor destination. The Sterkfontein Caves are owned by the University of Witwatersrand. The scientific exhibition centre show cases a reconstruction of a mined versus a pristine cave, cave formations and geologies, early life forms, mammals and homo-fossils, specific finds such as Mrs. Ples, the Taung child and Little Foot as well as details of fossilization, paleobatany and landscapes. Within the caves scientists have discovered thousands of hominid and other animal fossils dating back more than 4 million years to the birth of humanity.
